A store doing SAR 500K a month at 5% profit. The first analysis showed it was shipping at a loss without knowing. Blended margin hides more than it reveals.
Ask an owner about their margin and the answer usually comes as a single number for the whole company. That single number is precisely what hides the losses.
Blended margin lies
At a clinic group we worked with, aggregate reporting showed acceptable profitability. Once we split revenue and cost by specialty, two services turned out to be priced below cost — the rest of the practice was covering them.
The same held at an online gift store: SAR 500K monthly sales at 5% profit. The breakdown showed 18% of revenue leaking through loss-making shipping, high collection fees and returns.
What belongs in a real cost figure
- Direct product or service cost
- Shipping and packaging — measured, not estimated
- Payment gateway and collection fees
- Expected return rate per item
- Operating time each item consumes
Every saving converts straight into profit — provided you know where to look.
What happens once cost is measured
After breaking costs down, renegotiating with shipping suppliers, moving to cheaper digital wallets and improving product descriptions to cut returns, the store's margin went from 5% to 27%, and costs fell from 95% to 77% of revenue.
Sales volume did not change. What changed is that management could finally see where each riyal went.
