Five common VAT mistakes that cost companies penalties

Published 7 October 20261 min read

Tax penalties rarely come from intent to evade. They come from an unmanaged document cycle and returns prepared at the last minute.

The penalties we find at new clients repeat in much the same patterns. None of them stem from an attempt to evade; they stem from missing internal control.

The five mistakes

  • Preparing the return from the bank statement rather than the accounting records, so invoices go missing and non-revenue gets counted
  • Claiming input VAT on invoices that do not meet the regulatory requirements
  • Not separating exempt supplies from zero-rated ones
  • Deferring bank reconciliation until filing time, leaving differences with no time to resolve
  • Filing on the last day with no prior review
A return prepared at the last minute is a return that will be amended — and the amendment is itself a risk signal.

What actually prevents them

The factory mentioned in an earlier article had 25% VAT errors and three prior penalties. What ended the problem was not a tool but a sequence: clean the data first, then automate invoicing and bank reconciliation, then prepare ZATCA integration, and finally train the team.

The result was 100% compliance and zero issues with the authority.
